A "digital poster" session was held for the first time at the 2000 RWC Symposium as a new attempt, combining a traditional poster session with PC/video demonstrations.
The RWC laboratories which were to give digital poster sessions first delivered a 10-minute presentation on stage in the oral presentation area, outlining their research results and the demonstrations to be held in their respective digital poster session. Following the onstage briefing, the participating laboratories conducted the digital poster sessions with demonstrations at their exhibition booths. This arrangement overcame the problem of insufficient time for a Q&A session after the conventional oral presentations: the participants and laboratory representatives had enough time for technical discussions during the digital poster sessions and demonstrations.
Some people commented that the onstage presentations gave the audience a better understanding of each achievement and were effective. Many more people, however, highly evaluated the new presentation style which combined ordinary demonstrations using large machines with the conventional poster session, which allowed researchers to give a free Q&A session during the "prime time" when many people were visiting the session booth.
