SmartAlbum is a personal digital assistant for your (digital) photographs. It can automatically organise your photographs according to time, people profile, scenery, or even your own defined categories. Powered by content-based similarity matching, searching and navigation of relevant photographs through your collection become an intuitive experience. It can serve you on your personal computer and digital television, over broadband connection, or reside on your portable digital photo frame.

SmartAlbum is based on a novel object-driven technological framework. Transcending the current state-of-art which are feature- and region-based, the underlying object-driven methodology automatically extracts unifying object-based feature measures to construct semantics-based descriptions of the visual contents, which form the effective and efficient basis in similarity matching for retrieval and classification of photographs.

Sign Language Recognition and its Applications

We demonstrate a sign language education system and an information terminal type sign language translation system as example application of the sign language recognition method.

The purpose of the sign language education system is to increase the number of persons who understand sign language. The system can do the following using a sign language recognition method: (a) estimate the correctness of a movement; (b) perform interactive learning using a dialogue with animation characters; and (c) perform Japanese word searches from sign language manual movements.

The information terminal type sign language translation system is designed to help hearing impaired people to access more information. The system extracts search keys from sign-language sentences, searches for the information, and presents it to the user. The user can thus search for information by using sign language.

Visualization for Similarity-Based Image Retrieval Systems

We introduce a system retrieving and browsing images.

Although the images are, of course, directly visible, the world created by a large amount of image data is an abstract "information space" that exists only in a computer.

Our system provides a "concrete form" of this abstract "information space" that can be intuitively understood by the users.
