Research Activities and Achievements of RWCP in 1998

- RWC Project as Proved by Data -

Seven years have passed since the inception of the RWC Project. In past issues of "RWC NEWS," we have presented special feature articles on the work of the previous year. This current issue provides data on RWCP research and other activities during the 1998 project year (from April 1998 to March 1999) to inform readers about the latest achievements of RWCP.
To make the presentation easier to comprehend, we have included photographs, charts and tables. Please take a look at the following pages. We hope this special feature will help you understand the RWC Project.

1. Main RWCP Activities in FY1998

Apart from paper presentations by individual researchers at academic associations, RWCP presented its research results at the following:

June 9 (Tue.) - 10 (Wed.)
Schoenbach Sabo, Tokyo

At RWC'98, the overall achievements of the RWC Project during FY1997 were presented. In the morning of June 9, the plenary session was held including addresses by sponsors and guests, keynote speeches, and invited speeches. From the afternoon of June 9 to June 10, technical sessions were held to report research results on Parallel and Distributed Computing Technology and Real World Intelligence Technology. On June 11, a technical tour was held to show demonstrations at Tsukuba Research Center and the RWI Center of Electrotechnical Laboratory. The sessions on June 9 and 10 attracted 382 participants and the technical tour, a total of 110 participants, and were a great success.

Makuhari Messe

InterOpto'98 is the only comprehensive exhibition on optical technologies in Japan. RWCP made its first appearance with panel presentations on optical interconnection researches. Eight Optical Distributed Laboratories (Hitachi, Oki, NEC, Sumiden, NSG, Furukawa, Fujikura, and Fujitsu) gave separate panel presentations showing their current research activities and future research plans on optical interconnection, a key technology to the development of seamless computers in future. A total of 600 visitors came to the RWCP booth in four days.

AAAI-98, sponsored by the Association of American Artificial Intelligence, is the biggest international conference on artificial intelligence, and this was the 15th time. RWCP gave paper presentations at the technical sessions as well as demonstrations of 5 programs implemented on the RWCP-developed MMPC (a notebook PC which can be operated via speech and gestures) at the Intelligent System Demonstration. Amongst them, one for designing houses on a PC using a multimodal interface and one showing a large database retrieval system using galaxy clustering attracted much attention.

SC98: High Performance Networking and Computing is one of the biggest international conferences on supercomputers including parallel computers and high-performance networks. RWCP made its third appearance following SC96 and SC97. We took a 128-processor RWC PC Cluster II and a 32-processor RWC Alpha Cluster I into the exhibition site and gave demonstrations on our recent research results.
Distributed Laboratories related to Software, Architecture, and Applications gathered in one place to present their research results and CD-ROMs were distributed on a license basis, which promoted our latest research results and attracted a good response.
