FY1996 IEICE Engineers Young Engineer Award

Summery of Winning Paper:
The paper reports the results of the research on the "node-to-node optical interconnection of the massively parallel computer, RWC-1," which was jointly conducted by the RWC Tsukuba Research Center and the Optoelectronics Hitachi Laboratory.

The data connection between switching LSIs is accomplished with optical interconnection. Large-capacity and long-distance node-to-node data connection is done on a small device scale by installing optical interconnection.

The IEICE honors every year those people with distinguished merits and achievements, as well as authors of excellent papers and books. The principal awards include the Distinguished Services Award, the Achievement Award, the Morita Award, the Excellent Paper Award, the Inose Award, and the Young Engineer Award.

The "Young Engineer Award" is presented to outstanding young scientists and engineers who are recognized in order to promote the study of electronic engineering and information communication.

We are very pleased to report that Dr. Shinji Nishimura (Optoelectronics Research Department, Hitachi Central Research Laboratory, Hitachi, Ltd.) won the FY1996 Young Engineer Award. He is a member of the RWCP Optoelectronics Hitachi Laboratory.

This award recognizes the verification of the usefulness of optical interconnection to eliminate communication bottlenecks inside computers, theoretically expected, by prototyping specific equipment.

Dr. Nishimura said, "This award was won with the help of Dr. Shimada, director of the research institute; Dr. Hiroshi Matsuoka; Dr. Takashi Yokota; and other members at the RWC Tsukuba Research Center. I will endeavor to do my best to make this joint research fruitful this year."
